How to choose between them
Size to the room first: the ENERGY STAR chart, adjusted for sun, ceiling height and climate, decides the BTU. Our BTU calculator does it for you and lists the systems in range.
SEER2 is the maker's seasonal cooling efficiency under the 2023 DOE test; each point higher cuts cooling energy by roughly 5% at the same output. Heating efficiency (HSPF2) and the low-temperature rating matter more in cold climates.
